Did I make the right choice?

Today while going into my local regular pet shop ( I was getting some dog food) I saw a man with a baby Savannah Monitor, I thought it was kind of weird for it to be there because the only thing reptile related that they had there where anoles. As I was cheeking out I noticed the guy was gone and the workers had the baby Sav, while standing there I couldn't believe what I heard they thought it was some kind of alligator lizard or something and where going to let it go out back I almost died (dumbest workers I have ever seen they where all around my age 16-18) so I took it upon myself to inform them what it was and they offered to sell it to me for 180$ (a crazy price for a baby sav the reptile store I work at sells them for 45) I didn't want them to kill the poor thing so I dished out the money so know I am out 180 bucks and stuck with a very grumpy baby sav. I own one already and I really don't think I can afford to care for another one so in the morning I am going to beg my boss at the reptile store to take the baby in as his pet. Did I do the right thing? I normally don't try to save every animal I see (no one could afford that) but I couldn't help it this time.
